Exhibition 'Self-I' 2019 Kunstwerk St Pölten
This work is based on a recurring theme of mine: the chrysalis in nature as ideal transformative metamorphic process and the human degenerative form of entrapment of the physical through Mumification in the time of Ancient Egypt and how that might be put to right. ie what might a Modern work of art contribute through the creative process, and the conciousness that the artist might bring to that process. For me, as a student of natural history, the viewing glass of a microscope, or telescope, was a moment of self observation an 'Ich moment' as one crossed a threshold over from a normal sense through to a heightened, magnified world, and so i have often used viewing holes as Self-observations moments. Here one can see a rectangular folding 'observations frame'. The work is built around a Bier/ Litter/ Guerney frame stretched with bicycle tubes and carbon rear forks ( Hinterbau) from cycles which in the process of wrapping provide a very nice Beetle shape (sans Legs) and it just so happens that the Scarabaeus family has several beetles with iridescent bodies. So that was all a very nice conjunction.
